Epic Plan Went Wrong

Disclaimer: This piece was written during my first year of university for my Writing course assignment (recount text).

It was one sunny Saturday in 2011. I was in my second grade of junior high school. Saturday was a day for extracurricular activities. I was a part of the Science Club and happened to be the leader of it. At 6.30 a.m I was already dressed in my extracurricular uniform. The extracurricular began at 7.30 a.m, so I still had time to have breakfast. While eating breakfast, my father asked me whether he should drive me to school or not. I politely refused him and told him that I could go by myself. Because I had another place to go in mind.

I left home at 7.20 a.m, but not to school. I went to an Internet cafe. The Internet café was just about to open when I arrived. The owner smiled at me and told me to go upstairs, where the game section was. At that time I was the only customer because it was still very early. The game that I used to play named ‘Audition AyoDance.’ It was about dancing and fashion. So I logged in to the game and went straight to server Love. I greeted a few of my friends and asked where they were so I could join them.

The mode that we played was Crazy-8. I needed to press all the numbers on the right side of the keyboard. The song was Lucifer by SHINee. It wasn’t very hard since the song was only 125bpm. The next song was Wanna by Kara. The

level went higher. It was 161bpm and I hit the keyboard crazily because the song was fast.

We played, and played, and played until the clock showed that it was already 1 p.m. I was supposed to be home an hour ago, but I did not pay attention to the time. So I decided to go home. I spent 5 hours and a half there without realizing it. I, myself, was shocked by the fact that I stared at the monitor for that long.

While walking home, I thought about the game. It was really fun. And after several minutes of walking, I heard the sound of a motorbike horn. It was my father. And my only thought was how doomed I was. He stared at me coldly and asked me to join him. No words were said until we arrived home. I hurried myself to get inside the house.

My mother was sitting on the sofa, and ready to interrogate me. She asked where I had been, and I answered honestly. She talked about how irresponsible I was. Being a leader yet did not show up at all. She also forbade me to play that game again. It turned out, one of my friends asked her my whereabouts because I did not show up at the club.

Her words made me aware of my mistakes. If anything happened to the club, I should be the first one to act because I was the leader. And a leader should be responsible, yet I showed the opposite kind of act. I was irresponsible, and I would never do that ever again.
